Vol. 2: Contra Bonos Mores as a Legal Term in Need of Concretisation': The relevance and mode of action of mores in Roman law have been disputed for a long time. In the light of recent research on methodology, their functions are induced from the legal sources. Only mores based on the consensus of the Roman people were directly mandatory. Others require recognition by princeps or jurists. Contra bonos mores served, in edictal context, to delimit permitted and prohibited behaviour, otherwise to ensure coherence of decisions with regard to the legal and value system.
