Max Beckmann in Dialogue - Katalog zur Ausstelung im CFA Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin

The three artists are born or are living in the USA and have admired Max Beckmann's oeuvre since the beginning of their work. Outside Germany, Beckmann had always been regarded as the »most German of all artists«. The Valkyrie (l.) was one of the first paintings after his arrival in the United States in 1947. Cecily Brown delivered the impetus for the exhibition and publication, in which numerous works by Max Beckmann, both private and museum-owned, enter into dialogue with current works by the three painters, now part of the generation of grandchildren. In particular, it is his »Letters to a Woman Painter« - a speech given shortly after his arrival in the USA to students at Stephens College in Columbia - that receive metaphorical replies. In Cecily Brown's paintings, created specifically for this occasion, the influence is primarily of an atmospheric nature - references to Max Beckmann's contours and hues are rather apparent. Ella Kruglyanskaya shows portraits of women, the canvas almost bursting with their vitality, and they quite obviously caricature the bar and coffeehouse staff of the master. Dana Schutz combines Max Beckmann's recurring motifs in large-format works. In this way she accumulates the impressions and thereby quite closely approximates his world. Thus all three artists present autonomous works that attest to the timelessness of the »most German of all artists«.

Max Beckmann en dialogue avec Cecily Brown, Ella Kruglyanskaya et Dana Schutz

Cecily Brown, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Dana Schutz sont trois artistes qui vivent aux USA ou y sont nées et qui admirent l'oeuvre de Max Beckmann depuis le début de leur carrière artistique. Hors d'Allemagne, ce dernier a été considéré comme le « plus allemand de tous les artistes ». Sa « Walkyrie » est l'un des premiers tableaux peints en 1947 après son arrivée aux États-Unis. Cecily Brown est l'instigatrice de l'exposition et de la publication où de nombreuses oeuvres de Beckmann appartenant à des collectionneurs privées ou à des musées dialoguent avec des travaux actuels des trois peintres de la génération de ses petits-enfants. Ce sont surtout ses « Lettres à une peintre », un discours tenu peu après son arrivée aux USA devant des étudiantes du Stephens College de Columbia, qui trouvent ici des réponses métaphoriques. Dans les tableaux de Cecily Brown (d.), peints spécialement pour l'occasion, l'influence se ressent surtout dans l'atmosphère - les contours de Max Beckmann et ses teintes sautent aux yeux. Ella Kruglyanskaya de son côté peint des femmes qui font presque exploser la toile de vitalité et caricaturent manifestement le personnel du bar et du café peint par le maître. Enfin Dana Schutz assemble les motifs récurrents de Beckmann dans des tableaux grand format, empile ainsi les impressions et s'approche très près de son oeuvre. Les trois artistes créent donc des oeuvres indépendantes qui attestent de l'intemporalité du « plus allemand de tous les artistes ».

Die drei Künstlerinnen leben in den USA oder sind dort geboren. Seit Beginn ihrer Arbeit bewundern sie das Werk von Max Beckmann. Außerhalb Deutschlands wurde dieser als der »deutscheste aller Künstler« gesehen. Sein Bild »Walküre« (l.) war eines der Ersten, das er nach seiner Ankunft 1947 in den Vereinigten Staaten gemalt hat. Von Cecily Brown kommt die Anregung zu Ausstellung bzw. Publikation, in denen zahlreiche, aus privatem wie musealem Besitz stammende Werke Beckmanns mit aktuellen Arbeiten der drei Malerinnen der Enkelgeneration in Dialog treten. Dabei sind es insbesondere seine »Briefe an eine Malerin« - eine kurz nach seiner Ankunft in den USA vor Studentinnen des Stephens College in Columbia gehaltene Rede -, die metaphorische Antworten erhalten. Bei Cecily Browns Bildern, die sie eigens zu diesem Anlass gemalt hat, ist der Einfluss primär atmosphärischer Art - Max Beckmanns Konturierung sowie seine Farbtöne sind in ihnen unübersehbar. Ella Kruglyanskaya zeigt Bildnisse von Frauen, die in ihrer Vitalität die Leinwand fast zum Bersten bringen und ganz offensichtlich das Bar- und Kaffeehauspersonal des Meisters karikieren. Dana Schutz fügt die wiederkehrenden Motive Beckmanns in großformatigen Arbeiten zusammen, stapelt dergestalt die Eindrücke und kommt damit seiner Welt sehr nah. So schaffen alle drei Künstlerinnen autonome Werke, die die Zeitlosigkeit des »deutschesten aller Künstler« bezeugen.
