The volume publishes for the first time the complete correspondence between Ernst Barlach, the noted and distinguished artist, and Reinhard Piper, the influential and important publisher in his time. It introduces the reader to the cultural life in the first four decades of the 20th century. The letters are comprehensively annotated. The extensive commentary contains numerous so far unknown documents and recently discovered illustrations which provide a wealth of new information on Barlach's life and work.
