Theories of punishment deals with the question of how criminal punishment can be justified. Punishment by the state puts considerable pressure not only on the offender being punished, but also on the society which has to bear the costs. A careful justification is needed, one which considers the interests of the victims and society as well as the necessity of legitimation with respect to the offenders.
